I don’t know how many regulars I have here, but things have been mostly silent these days. My running is continuing. I’m trying to mix it up with some crosstrain. I’ve been trying to eat a little better – but I’m not on a diet.
My bunion has been my biggest frustration. I struggle with arch supports. I have pain when I run, but at no other time. A part of me just wants to get the surgery and be done with it. But, I know I can’t do that. But I also know that I can’t seriously train for any other races until my bunion is resolved. I’m not even sure I could run another half.
So, I wait and see.
I’ll be back sometime when the mood strikes me.

This is late, but…
I have had the surgery, though I wasn’t a runner at the time. I’d call it a success! I can wear all kinds of shoes now (I used to only wear shoes of very soft fabric or sandals, and yes that is before running) and my feet don’t hurt at all when I run.
Knowing how much I love running now, if I had to face the surgery and recovery time again in order to run comfortably, I’d do it in a heartbeat!
Lacey that is great news about your bunion. I’m having surgery in January which I am terrified of. I do a little amount of running now because of my bunions which I have had all of my life. My hope is to be able to run more afterwards but I have been seeing all sorts of negative info on Post op incidents about how their big toe is stiff and they can’t run. So I’ve been very anxious! Good to hear a positive outcome!
This is extremely late, but…..
I was just recently (in the past few weeks) bitten by the running bug. I ran track in high school (25 years ago) but have never been interested in running as an adult, until now! I found this post because I was looking for sites discussing running after bunion surgery. I have had bunion surgery on both feet. The first was in 1998 and was a breeze, I was ready to go back to work 3 days later. The second was in 2002 and wasn’t such a breeze! There was quite a bit more “adjustment” needed on the second one. I was off work for 2 weeks & had considerably more pain. However, both surgeries were well worth it! It can take about one year to FULLY recover from the surgery. It can take up to 3 months for the swelling to go down enough to get your foot back into your regular size shoe & your range of motion will return (with exercise) within the year.
After reading Lacey’s post, I see that I can look forward to taking up the sport of running after bunion surgery! Thanks!
Just came across this on google and just had to answer! I suffer with terrible bunion on my left foot and i have run regularly for last 4 years although only running about 20 miles or so a week the running doesnt cause my bunions any problems at all! just walking!
I have thought about surgery but for me the thought of not being able to run while i am recovering after surgery is what is totally putting me off having it done!
How long will it be before i can start running again realistically??
I had bunion surgery when I was in college. It takes about 5 months from surgery time. I kept asking my pediatrist when I’d be about to go back to the gym after my 3rd month and he laughed. It was discouraging but if your bunion is that bad, have it done. I want to get my right foot done now and hope that i can sometime in the future.
I had bunion surgery in November and my dr. told me I could begin running again SLOWLY at the end of January. I have been doing some step aerobics, spinning classs, Zumba and walking. Although my foot is doing much better anytime I do a work out with much impact it is pretty painful for the nex several hours. I am wanting to run agan (previously ran about 4 miles/day before bunion pain stopped me) but am a little aftraid of tyring again – But I love it and it is definately calling to me.
